Agile Defense Key to Department of Navy Commercial Cloud Implementation

The Department of the Navy (DON) Chief Information Officer (CIO) recently commended Agile Defense for its outstanding support during the stand-up of the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) public portal in an Amazon Web Services (AWS) commercial cloud environment, the first ever for a system within the DON.

Supporting the DON, Assistant for Administration (DON/AA) Information Technology Division (ITD) for over six years, Agile Defense successfully advised the government in configuring and setting up AWS for the Mission Assurance Category (MAC) III public environment.

Agile Defense’s effort resulted in a 66 percent reduction from previous web hosting costs and has paved the way for future DON and Department of Defense cloud infrastructure implementations – achieving the goal of major Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) savings using commercial cloud resources.

Based on the company’s successes, DON/AA has entrusted Agile Defense to advise on the MAC II intranet architecture and implementation that is awaiting final approval. Features of Agile Defense’s approach and the benefits DON/AA realized are detailed in the following table.

Agile Defense implemented Microsoft’s SharePoint collaboration and content management toolset on the AWS platform, including an upgrade from MOSS 2007 to MOSS 2010 with standard site templates and workflows. This accomplishment resulted in standardizing DON’s public facing websites to utilize a common AWS platform – achieving measurable ROI on its investment in cloud technology.Leading the cloud and consolidation efforts for the entire Department of the Navy, DON/AA relied on Agile Defense to collaborate with SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic and AWS to establish an IaaS platform to support SECNAV requirements. To address security issues, Agile Defense configured HTTPS and SSL coding, which resulted in the AWS environment being PKI enabled for CAC usage.

Finally, Agile Defense assisted with modifying code to enhance the usability of the environment and to improve overall functionality; and developed and implemented custom search and deployment schedules for the SECNAV and “21st Century Sailor and Marine” portals during their transition to AWS.

This effort is also enabling DON to show real progress toward required Data Center Consolidation Implementation Plan metrics. DON/AA looks to Agile Defense as a key advisor in developing the roadmap for future use of the new AWS environment as it pursues an enterprise-wide application rationalization exercise. The benchmark results from this project will yield valuable cost analyses to help DON drive future cloud-based TCO scenarios.
